Look up inspirational quotes and you’re almost guaranteed to see a bunch of them talking about passion: finding your passion, pursuing your passion, living your passion.

That’s easier said than done for people who aren’t exactly sure what their passion is or how they can fuel it in their hectic and busy lives.

Most of us have at least one thing we’re truly passionate about, even if we don’t realize it. To figure out yours, ask yourself the following questions:

What inspires me?

Inspiration can come from a person, a place, an activity, or even an object. If being in nature makes you want to explore, nature inspires you. If seeing someone help someone less fortunate makes you want to get involved, service inspires you. Basically, if it drives you toward action, it inspires you.

Another part of inspiration is having admiration for people who are involved in something. When you truly admire a person and what they are doing, whether it’s helping someone or achieving a goal, it can really inspire you to take the necessary actions to achieve it yourself.

Knowing what moves and inspires you is the first step in finding your passion if it makes you want to take productive action, it just might be your passion.

What gives me purpose?

Inspiration alone isn’t enough to equate to passion. Deadlines inspire people to get work done; alarms inspire people to get out of bed (sometimes), yet they’re definitely not considered passions. You have to ask yourself another question: What gives me purpose?

Purpose is the central motivating factor in your life. If you ask yourself why you make certain decisions, why you do certain things, and why you are pulled in certain directions, you can often find your purpose. It’s different for everyone, but every individual has one based on their life experiences.

Once you know your purpose, you can figure out how to contribute to it and contribute to the world. You can create and share something, participate in an activity or serve others in a way that lets you live your purpose.

Does my current job inspire me and give me purpose? Or can I be more?

Once you know what your passion is, ask yourself if you’re living it. How many people would say their current job actually fuels their passion, inspires them and gives them purpose? For most people, that’s not the case.

Most people could be getting more out of life if they chose a different career path. Whether it’s a job with a more flexible work schedule that allows you to pursue your passions outside of work, or a career that itself inspires and gives purpose, odds are that you could be getting more out of your work life.

Can I fuel my passion with a side hustle?

Once you find your passion, it’s important to fuel it and keep it going. While having a career that fuels your passion is not common, it is the easiest way to find fulfillment while still earning an income.
