That’s known as energy poverty. And because energy poverty means no light to study by, no outlets to charge phones, and no Internet to connect with the world, it perpetuates financial poverty as well. Even in developed nations, far too many families are forced to choose between keeping the lights on and keeping food on the table.

Threats to our planet’s natural ecosystem affect human health, economic security, infrastructure and communities. Saving ecosystems is often far simpler and more cost-effective than human-made interventions.

This is extreme poverty. Without enough good food, medical care and educational opportunity, young bodies and minds can’t develop to their full potential. And because children are the future of all communities everywhere, everybody–every one of us –is the poorer for it.

OUR GLOBAL INITIATIVE
We will make a difference, one action at a time.
Each effort may just be a drop in the bucket. But with enough drops, you can make whole oceans.
Individually, we are powerful. Collectively, we are unstoppable.
It’s easy to be overwhelmed by big numbers—1.1 billion without access to electricity, 57 million primary school-aged kids without access to a school, half the world’s forests deforested. We can’t change it all overnight. But we can begin to make a change—one step at a time. One foot in front of the other. One good turn. Through our One At A Time initiative, we support the work of experienced international partners who are skilled in meeting the needs of underserved communities. It’s how Viv contributes our 1% for social good, but it’s a lot more substantial than just writing a check: We aim to forge enduring relationships both with the service agencies we choose and the people they serve.
Many times, we’ll even participate and work hands-on ourselves. We learned quite a few years ago that making the world a better place makes our own lives better as well. In October, 2018 Viv completed its first global One At A Time initiative to Guatemala. Two dozen Viv Life Consultants lives were positively impacted as they worked side-by-side with local students to build clean cookstoves for families in need. Our positive change may spread out in huge ripples, but the only sure way to get it going is simply one person, one action, one choice, one thing at a time.
